Golf As A Metaphor For Life…Now That is Profound!

In Arizona we have about 340 golf courses, with a very large portion of those being in Maricopa County…that’s A LOT.   So it is safe to say that golf is a huge part of the culture here.  Personally, I just love riding around on the cart most days.  I have been told I have a really great swing but once that little ball is stuck in front of me I suddenly become a golfing spaz.    Thank goodness for scenery!

Did you know the odds of making two holes-in-one in one round of golf is 1 in 67 million!

Before the Olympics in 1980 there was an experiment done using top athletes and visualization techniques.  The experiment divided the athletes into 4 groups ranging from physical conditioning to mental conditioning to combinations of the two.  The interesting part was that the worst performing group was that group who just trained physically.  The best performing group was the group who had the most amount of mental preparation.  Several similar studies have been conducted since then with similar outcomes.

With this knowledge I should now be able to play some seriously good golf.  I will visualize myself taking that drive straight down the fairway and right for the pin.  Maybe even a hole in one!  I am getting excited already!!!

Ok…you are probably asking…why does she keep talking about golf…is there a point here?  Yes there is and this is it: the reason I am using golf as an example is because it is a sport that frustrates the crap out of me.  Apparently I have the technical skills but I am lacking in some part that is causing me to not be successful.  Like a lot of things in our life we have the ability to perform certain tasks but we never take it to its fullest potential.  Without visualizing ourselves succeeding at our goals, and living the life we want to live, we are falling short.

Another question you may ask is, Christie, you are a  Realtor (R) …how does this even relate to real estate?  That is really easy…there are lots of very cool houses for sale on golf courses and if you prefer the scenery than that may be a good option for you :)

Do you visualize your self fulfilling your goals?  What technique do you use?

My New Understanding of The Art of Feng Shui

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending an event Larry Wingetwas hosting and there I met a woman named Deborah Kagan.  Deborah shared with me that she used to coach many real estate professionals on the art of Feng Shui.  I really don’t know much about it other than a few clients have chosen, or not chosen, a property based on certain floor plans.  So I started doing some research and here are some very basic things I learned, because one thing I now know for sure is that there is more to this than I ever realized.   Some parts of it feel like the Law of Attraction and others feel like abundance thinking.  Also this blog could be 15 pages based on all the information out there.  I am just going to hit on the highlights.

Feng Shui is a Chinese art developed over 3000 years ago based on art and science.  Loosely stated Feng Shui is based on an understanding that the land is filled with Chi, or energy and that energy can cause you to strive to great success or fail miserably.

The 3 most important parts of your home, when it comes to Feng Shui are:

Front Door:  This is the most important space because it allows wealth and opportunities to come into your life and is the chi mouth of the home.  Your front door, according to Deborah, should be visible from the street, bright, well lit and inviting, all knobs, locks and latches function perfectly, clutter free on both sides, and the door can open a full 90 degrees.  Take a minute to evaluate your door and see if all the test have passed.  If the tests are not passed experts recommend you take care of this immediately.

Kitchen (specifically your stove): According to Ken Lauher, “the stove has a great deal to do with our public life, our career, the recognition we receive, and our ability to manifest our goals and dreams”.  Be sure your stove is free of clutter and functioning properly.  Never favor one burner on your stove.  Alternate using the burners, even if it is to use one to light a candle.  Additionally the kitchen effects the health and well being of its inhabitants.   Have several levels of lighting available and liven up the kitchen area with colorful flowers, yellow is a good choice.

Bedroom: This is the place where you are meant to relax and rejuvenate.  The placement of your bed in this room is essential.   Your bed is the most important piece of Feng Shui furniture so pay attention.  You need a good, solid headboard, a mattress that will promote sleep, and your bed needs to be at a height where energy can travel around it, also meaning no clutter under your bed to stop the energy. be sure your bed can see the door to the room but DO NOT have your feet facing the door.

There are a large number of websites dedicated to this ancient art, and I would love to hear your ideas or thoughts on the practice.

Collaborative, not Competitive

Yesterday I had the great pleasure to attend Inman News’ Agent Reboot.  It is an event where people from all areas of the real estate industry come together and learn ways and tools that will help make our business run faster, better and more efficiently.  One of the other benefits of the event is meeting all the people who attend

This is the first time I have been to Agent Reboot and all I can say is, wow!  I heard from great speakers such as Katie Lance and Chris Smith from Inman, Jay Thompson, Jimmy Mackin, Jim Marks, Steve Pacinelli, and Darin Persinger.  Each imparted a great deal of wisdom, they SHARED their ways of becoming successful.

One of my bigger challenges when I first became an agent was trying to learn best business practices from seasoned agents.  It seemed everyone was trying to protect their “trade secret”.  Unfortunately it effected me because I felt like an outsider who couldn’t figure it out and it lead to some confidence issues, as you can imagine.

What I found at Reboot, was that not only the speakers where sharing, but all the agents and real estate professionals who were there were sharing.  Everyone I met was of the same mindset that we will work better as agents when we work together.  I met really wonderful professionals who are obviously passionate about their careers and their clients.

I look forward to implementing new systems and becoming better at what I do.  I look forward to potentially working with one of these amazing professionals I met yesterday and continuing some great relationships.  What events, seminars or workshops have you attended that helped you move your career forward???
